Six Questions

Six Questions with Thistle & Clover

by Tina on July 6, 2010

Co-founders Camilla Gale and Rand Niederhoffer opened Brooklyn boutique Thistle & Clover in March of 2008, and have since been outfitting New Yorkers (note: they sell online too) with unique and approachable style ever since. Their dedication to indie designers such as Dace and Mociun caught my eye quickly, and I’ve grown to love their warm, feminine aesthetic more and more each season. I knew the store was operated by two adorable women who met while at University in Scotland, but I had to learn more! I caught up with Rand and Camilla for our six questions interview series.  Turns out their personalities are just as inviting as their boutique.

Here’s what they had to say:

SB: Which designers are you most excited about for Fall?

T&C: Iro (we’re bringing the must-have label back from a fourth season hiatus), Dusen Dusen (her star scape prints are to die for), and of course, Trovata (a label we live for and in). [READ MORE...]

Six Questions With Candice Waldron of Jumelle

by Tina on February 8, 2010

Saying I love Brooklyn-based boutique jumelle is an understatement. Their mix of classic staples, Parisian-cool wares,  and a grown-up girly vibe sets my heart aflutter every season and it’s reassuring to know that there is such a nice woman behind the boutique. Owner Candice Waldron took time out of her very busy schedule to answer a few of my questions about the boutique, her favorites this spring, and some other stuff:

A Detacher Dolores dress

A Detacher

S.B.: Do you have any favorite new designers for spring?

C.W.: Ostwald Hegalson: I was instantly taken with this line when I came across it last year in Paris. There was no doubt that I would be ordering this collection for the shop. Based in London, Susanne Ostwald and Ingvar Hegalson create narrative prints and employ a kaleidoscope of colors in their designs. Standard Finery is designed by Williamsburg local Caron Callahan. Prior to starting her own collection Callahan worked at Barneys, Derek Lam and Steven Alan. She has created a collection “for women who love beautiful clothes but don’t need to make a fuss about them.”Anntian: I have had my eye on this Berlin-based line for a couple of years now and it will finally be available at jumelle this Spring. Anntian is designed by Anne Hilken and Christian Kurt, one of the sweetest couples I’ve met. Their line is artistic, geometric, offbeat and modern.

S.B.: Can you name a few must-have items from the shop currently circulating in your closet?

Wang sweatshirt

Alexander Wang

C.W.: My spring must-haves: 1. Striped boatneck tee from Alexander Wang. A slouchy, American take on the classic French breton striped shirt.

2. Bunter dress from Ostwald Hegalson. A new collection to jumelle that I am very eager about. This is a great, vibrant dress printed with what the London-based designers reference as a “striped crumbled paper print.”

3. I consistently love everything from Mona Kowalska’s A Detacher line, but this season I will definitely be purchasing the Dolores dress, a runway favorite. The wallpaper silk floral pattern is demure and romantic, but the cut of the dress is sophisticated, wearable and effortless…classic A Detacher. It also looks great paired with any of Kowalska’s “Petra” leggings.

4. Lover Mono Floral vintage print one-piece. I think Lover makes one the best swimwear collections around. I plan to wear this one-piece as a bodysuit with my favorite vintage jean skirt, old Levis, layered under a sundress and at the beach of course.

Jodphur boot

Jodphur Boots

5. Jodhpur High-heel boot in brown from Swedish Hasbeens. We had this style in black and plum for Fall, but they sold out before I could get a pair. This season I will be sure to purchase early.

6. Diamond bar studs from local jeweler Satomi Kawakita. These are the perfect everyday earrings that go with everything. Subtle, sparkle and shine.

*all of these items will be available online and in-store early March.

S.B.: What is the best part about owning your own boutique?

C.W.: I love the customer interaction. One of the constant comments we received from customers the very first day we opened the shop almost four years ago was “I am so glad you opened this shop here. We needed you.”

The majority of our customers live in the neighborhood, are loyal regulars and it has been wonderful forming close relationships with them and their families. Many have children as well so seeing them grow up has been a delight. Some of these customers have become my closest friends over the years.

I also very much love the change of season and introducing new collections to the shop – it keeps things interesting and the shop fresh.

Lover one-piece

Lover One-piece

S.B.: Other than jumelle, where are you shopping online? How about locally in Brooklyn?

C.W.: I am very much a supporter of small businesses, especially those in Brooklyn since this is my home. One of my personal favorites is Sweet William, a children’s boutique owned by friend and jumelle customer Bronagh Staley. I also love Book Court, a well-stocked, independent bookstore in Cobble Hill.

S.B.: Where do you do most of your buying each season? New York, Paris, etc…?

C.W.: We conduct most of our buying in New York and Paris, however I also do much exploring and research on my travels and vacation. Recently I discovered a line of bags (hand-made by two sisters) in Barcelona as well as hand-made leather sandals in Merida, Mexico. My sister spends a lot of time in India so she often brings back beautiful jewelry, textiles and Khadi scarves.

S.B.: What’s next for jumelle? Any plans or collaborations in the works?

C.W.: We are mounting a photo installation by Kirsten Kay Thoen, an extremely talented local photographer who was just named one most innovative women in new art photography by the Humble Arts Foundation.

We are looking forward to the arrival of new spring merchandise as well as Fashion Week and the Fall/Winter 2010 buying season, which commences later this month.

Six Questions with Colin Talbot

by Tina on January 25, 2010

idontlikemondaysIn the world of e-commerce, some online-only boutiques do it well…and others do it really well. I Dont Like Mondays does it really well, so well their online presence is all you need — you won’t miss trying on the goods, because they offer free shipping and returns! Ever since their semi-recent debut, this New York based online retailer born from a warehouse loft dishes out a cool mix of inspiring wares for him and her…and their selection improves dramatically each season. With a combo of up-and-coming labels like Savant and Stolen Girlfriends Club and more established names like Melissa shoes and Cheap Monday, IDLM is gaining some serious recognition, deservedly so.  One of the creative forces behind the shop, part owner/buyer Colin Talbot was up for participating in my Six Questions behind the boutique series. He dishes on some best-selling labels, the best part about owning a boutique, and the shop’s exciting future:

1.) S.B.: Favorite new designers? stolen-dot-dress-bm

C.T.: They’re not technically “new” but Stolen Girlfriends Club is definitely a new favorite of mine.  The line has had a great response from the media and the bloggers and it’s one of our top selling lines. Not to mention, the guys behind the line are kick ass.

Another collection to look out for is Savant.  It’s a label from NY designer and dear friend Feng-Feng Yeh.  Her first collection in Spring was hugely successful and she’s really upped the ante this Fall, so I’m expecting this collection to be an even bigger hit.

2.) S.B.: Five must-have items from the shop you’ve been wearing?

C.T.: Unfortunately I’m not stocking much in the way of menswear as of yet.  HOWEVER I’ve placed a lot of orders on men’s collections for Spring 10, so male customers will have much more to choose from on the website.

5preview-y5l-tank-cmAs for Fall ’09 hits:

Obesity and Speed – Black Shredded Cobweb Tee, Melissa Shoes – Ashanti Bootie (sold out) , Ground Zero – Madonna Tee, 5Preview – Y5L Tank, April 77 – Mountain Spring Cardigan

3.) S.B.: What is the best selling item or designer in the store?

C.T.: 5Preview, Obesity and Speed, and Ground-Zero killed it this fall.

4.) S.B.: Other than I Dont Like Mondays, where are you shopping online? How about locally?

C.T.: I shop a lot of vintage and consignment. The East Village has some pretty amazing stores.  And eBay is always good for some rare finds.

5.) S.B.: What is your favorite thing about owning your own boutique?

C.T.: Fashion retail is incredibly fun and it’s one of those things that anyone can do.  This all started as a pipe dream when I was living in Bed-Stuy two years ago struggling to make ends meet. I was able to scrape what little money I had to create a simple website to sell some t-shirts I made.  Since then it’s snowballed into what it is today and it seems to keep on growing.  I’ve been really fortunate to have such an amazing response and I hope this ride continues for a while because this really is the most fun I’ve had working EVER.

savant-harem-silk-am6. ) S.B.: What’s up next for I Dont Like Mondays? Any plans, trunk shows or collaborations in the works?

C.T.: The new Gallery project for Spring is out of this world.  I can’t say who and what it is as we’re keeping that a secret for now, but it really is stunning.  We’re also considering having an event in the near future, sort of a dance party/pop-up shop extravaganza.  Still figuring out timing and logistics so stay tuned!

editorial note: make sure to check out I Dont Like Mondays’ blog for regular posts on art, events and more…not to missed. And if you’re into Twitter and Facebook you can follow them there too!

cofc3I’ll admit it. I’m a Creatures of Comfort addict. They have a special talent of stocking my favorite pieces from designers like Rachel Comey, Henrik Vibskov, A.P.C., LD Tuttle and ACNE, season upon season. Since relocating to Los Angeles, I’ve found myself at their Melrose Ave. boutique more times then my budget will allow. Add that to their well-stocked Web boutique and I’ve got a serious problem on my hands. Jad Lai, owner and buyer was nice enough to participate in my 6 Questions serious and share some top secret info. Ok, maybe not top secret, but stuff she doesn’t tell just anyone:

S.B.:Wh0 are your favorite new designers for fall?
J.L.:
For fall we picked up Tom Scott, a sweater designer from NY. He makes really unique and well designed knitwear that I want everyone to try on. Also from Berlin Christian Wijnants. He creates collections with amazing textile and unusual shapes. For accessories, Manu by Lauren Manoogian. She just moved here from NY and makes these amazing paperclip and tape necklaces. Next season she’ll be making equally colorful and playful jewelry, but with leather. Also new in the store, we have clogs from No.6. We sell out of them really quickly since they’re comfortable and sexy at the same time.

S.B.: Name five must-have items from the shop you’ll be wearing this season?91840
J.L.:
1. Zucca Sweater Hoody 2. Rachel Comey Leopard Skirt 3. VPL Femur Leggings , 4. Isabel Marant Leopard Fur Coat 5. Therese Rawsthorne Contortionist Shirt

S.B.: What’s the best selling item or designer in the store? How about the most popular trends this season so far?
J.L.:
Isabel Marant and Henrik Vibskov. Animal prints and leggings seem to be getting their play this season.

S.B.: Other than Creatures, where are you shopping online? How about locally in L.A.?
J.L.:
Saint James for my stripe shirts, Amazon.com for books, Heath for tableware, ebay for vintage furniture and jewelry. In LA, I love South Willard for my menswear sweaters and notebooks, Ooga Booga for art zines and random art objects, Hennessey and Ingalls book store in Santa Monica, OK on 3rd street for gifts and knick knacks.

91142S.B.: What’s your favorite thing about owning a boutique?
J.L.:
I’ve met many of my closest friends through the store. Either when they came in to shop, or some are designers and artists I work with. Also, it’s nice to be forced to travel to exotic places for the store. Traveling on buying trips gets tiring sometimes, but it can be a lot worse.

S.B.: What’s next for Creatures of Comfort? Any plans, trunk shows or collaborations in the works?
J.L.:
Creatures of Comfort just launched a line for ss10. Also there are plans for a store in NYC… And collaborations will just come naturally, with all the designers we work with…

Creatures of Comfort is located at 7971 Melrose Ave in Los Angeles and online at www.creaturesofcomfort.us.
