Spring Shopping List: Creatures of Comfort

by Tina on February 24, 2010

Spring orders are arriving like crazy, so I thought it due time to launch my “Shopping List” segment: a list of items I’ll be buying (eventually), broken down by boutique. First up is Creatures of Comfort. I nearly started drooling when I clicked on their new arrivals. Gross I know, but they’re that good:

1. APC Tassle Loafer $390, 2. Wood Wood Susan Dress $110, 3. Zucca Tahiti Print Shorts, $510,  4. Wood Wood Teresa Trousers $145,  5. No.6 Clog Sandal $215

cofc3I’ll admit it. I’m a Creatures of Comfort addict. They have a special talent of stocking my favorite pieces from designers like Rachel Comey, Henrik Vibskov, A.P.C., LD Tuttle and ACNE, season upon season. Since relocating to Los Angeles, I’ve found myself at their Melrose Ave. boutique more times then my budget will allow. Add that to their well-stocked Web boutique and I’ve got a serious problem on my hands. Jad Lai, owner and buyer was nice enough to participate in my 6 Questions serious and share some top secret info. Ok, maybe not top secret, but stuff she doesn’t tell just anyone:

S.B.:Wh0 are your favorite new designers for fall?
J.L.:
For fall we picked up Tom Scott, a sweater designer from NY. He makes really unique and well designed knitwear that I want everyone to try on. Also from Berlin Christian Wijnants. He creates collections with amazing textile and unusual shapes. For accessories, Manu by Lauren Manoogian. She just moved here from NY and makes these amazing paperclip and tape necklaces. Next season she’ll be making equally colorful and playful jewelry, but with leather. Also new in the store, we have clogs from No.6. We sell out of them really quickly since they’re comfortable and sexy at the same time.

S.B.: Name five must-have items from the shop you’ll be wearing this season?91840
J.L.:
1. Zucca Sweater Hoody 2. Rachel Comey Leopard Skirt 3. VPL Femur Leggings , 4. Isabel Marant Leopard Fur Coat 5. Therese Rawsthorne Contortionist Shirt

S.B.: What’s the best selling item or designer in the store? How about the most popular trends this season so far?
J.L.:
Isabel Marant and Henrik Vibskov. Animal prints and leggings seem to be getting their play this season.

S.B.: Other than Creatures, where are you shopping online? How about locally in L.A.?
J.L.:
Saint James for my stripe shirts, Amazon.com for books, Heath for tableware, ebay for vintage furniture and jewelry. In LA, I love South Willard for my menswear sweaters and notebooks, Ooga Booga for art zines and random art objects, Hennessey and Ingalls book store in Santa Monica, OK on 3rd street for gifts and knick knacks.

91142S.B.: What’s your favorite thing about owning a boutique?
J.L.:
I’ve met many of my closest friends through the store. Either when they came in to shop, or some are designers and artists I work with. Also, it’s nice to be forced to travel to exotic places for the store. Traveling on buying trips gets tiring sometimes, but it can be a lot worse.

S.B.: What’s next for Creatures of Comfort? Any plans, trunk shows or collaborations in the works?
J.L.:
Creatures of Comfort just launched a line for ss10. Also there are plans for a store in NYC… And collaborations will just come naturally, with all the designers we work with…

Creatures of Comfort is located at 7971 Melrose Ave in Los Angeles and online at www.creaturesofcomfort.us.

Relocating to Los Angeles came with some great perks, like being first in line at all our favorite boutiques during sale time. Creatures of Comfort had an amazing sale a couple weeks ago, and as they promised, their good are now available online and surprisingly there is still a ton (enough to do some serious damage) of great merchandise on sale, like these pieces:

Creatures of Comfort received their spring shipment of Rachel Comey shoes. Their selection is huge as always. Most other boutiques have received their shipments as well so make sure to check them out–we’re particularly fond of this pair at Anica.

Sabrina Dehoff won our admiration with one of her miniature stuffed mask necklaces at Creatures of Comfort, and then with a handful of other lovely pieces. This coming spring, German based Dehoff has added some easy-going yet seriously cool clothing to the mix, along with a great selection of jewelry–ranging from teeny tiny wooden animals as necklaces, to bolder, chunkier bracelets and necklaces made out of scarfs adorned with metal attachments. Make sure to visit her Web site for more images.
